Dec-Approved 2000 to 2020
3rd January 2000 – the date we chose to start Dec-Approved. While the rest of the world were still finding stray corks from their Millennium parties, we drove to Staples to buy accounting books and visited wary builder’s merchants in person to open credit accounts. The number one song at the time was Westlife ‘I have a dream’ which was very apt – Neil had secured enough work for one month…
Where did the name DEC-Approved originate from? A friend had a one man band derived from his initials D.E.C and we liked the sound of it, especially as we were starting out as a DECorating firm.
We didn’t have a computer, there was no online banking, and our only bit of technology was Neil’s state of the art Nokia 3210 – no apps, no camera – just phone calls and text messages (which he’s still coming to terms with). I worked from home, Childminder by day, office administrator by night. Wages were drawn out in cash and handed over in little brown envelopes with the tax deductions hand written on the front – such was the norm.
Suddenly 20 years go by – The World has experienced terror attacks, peace in Northern Ireland, the birth of social media, a global recession, the iPhone, numerous UK Prime Ministers and now Brexit.
Dec-Approved has grown from ‘just’ a Decorating Company to cover as many possible trades as we can. From rectifying flood damage in family homes to refurbishing five star hotels for national chains and every house extension and loft conversion in between – while retaining the same quality of customer service and the personal touch. We’ve continued to trade through some difficult times and more than one recession, and we have recently welcomed the next Headdock generation who are stepping up and will lead us on.
We couldn’t have achieved this 20 year milestone without an exceptional team of tradespeople – ensuring our loyal customers keep coming back and recommending us to their friends and colleagues. That used to be our only form of advertising – word of mouth – it has served us well over the years.
As we celebrate – we will raise a glass to all of the staff past and present who have been part of the team – and to all of our clients past present and future – thank you for helping us to make it happen.
